Strength Training Isn’t Just For Bodybuilders

The old idea that strength training is for body builders and women shouldn’t do it if they don’t want to get bigger is a huge myth!
Strength training is extremely important as part of any workout.  It pays off in great emotional as well as physical benefits.

If you want to maintain your bone and muscle strength, you definitely need to turn your attention to strength training.  Once we’ve gone through puberty, the rest of your life you will begin to lose about 1 percent of your bone and muscle strength every year.  This is true for both men and women.

This is supported by a health professional who has done the research and sees this happening on a daily basis.
“One of the best ways to stop, prevent, and even reverse bone and muscle loss is to add strength training to your workouts,” advises Troy Tuttle, MS, an exercise physiologist at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston.”

Find some strength training that you would enjoy and include it in your schedule on a regular basis.  Your body will thank you for it!

You have made me think. It is time to get back and exercise. I used to exercise before I left for work at home and then walk around my building about once a day at work. Somehow I have fell off that program I had. What are some basics ones a person can start with given the time they have to work on strength training?

Thanks for this great reminder. You’ve also reminded me to share the importance of strengths training with my clients. I especially appreciate your reminding women of the importance of beginning strengths training as early as possible.

P.S. I also spent some time at Mt. Baker this summer . . . sheer bliss.

I like to use my hubby’s weights and do some simple exercises. I also like the weights you can strap around you wrists and ankles. I also add work with stretch bands and exercise ball.

I am not a body builder - but if you read my blog on my website you will see that I have been writing about Boomer Boot Camp. At BBC we use weights, balance, and push ups to build strength. This strength is needed to age without falling. I am a firm believer in the need to keep exercising but the proper exercise which is a mixture of types of exercises to age with “grace.”

It has become part of my life now to do some form of exercise. It truly helps a lot with your day to day activities.
