What a great story, Suzanne. I was right there with you in the water, in the pain and in the appreciation and flow. The thing is I was fine in your body. I can't even conceive of having that courage in my own. Part of it is, I'm not much of a swimmer. But more so, I admire your energy and again, what for me, shows up as courageousness! Kudos to you!

I loved how you focused on your goal and stayed with the flow of what your body was telling you...first the warning pain, then catching your rhythm, then letting your energy take you farther.
Great lesson. Thanks.

Great and moving article. Thanks also for the reminders of acknowledgment. I keep meaning to write one for the tech who does painfree mammograms.

Back to Southwest. I remember their singing and game playing several years ago. Fun. Great points also on their policies. Why not others also!

Wow you got to spend time with Wyatt Webb and the horse what an opportunity. I don't buy many horse books anymore, but a couple of years ago I purchase Wyatt's book "It's Not About The Horse" very interesting I am going to read it again.

I feel the energy from the horse and think of it as energy following energy. Since the Horse is the biggest bundle of sensitive nerve tissue walking the planet, they can teach us so much about ourselves, and I won't even start on the spiritual stuff. I am jealous.

Thanks Suzanne. Decisiveness is also attractive in relationships too. I did not realize this till I had a conversation with my man-love (better than boyfriend)and he told me how he loved my decisiveness and how it gave me an attractive confidence. I try to remember this when I begin to waffle...And it is a great skill for business too. Miraval is an incredible place, look forward to hearing more when I see you next! Paula

I have been communicating with animals and nature professionally for almost two decades. I have done over 8,000 consultations. The problem with humans is they are often very "unclear" with their messages. Most of us spent our lives as children being instilled with fear, so that we would end up "being safe". We often train animals in similar ways, like "breaking a horse", using choke collars on dogs and squirt bottles with cats and so on. When people engage with animals, they often worry about the dog chewing something, the cat not using the litter box, the dog on the couch, the horse not lifting his foot...etc. The worry becomes an Unconscious movie in our minds and we yell and scream at animals as if they were humans with fur on and could rationalize and understand what we "don't want". We seldom ever ever say things like, "Duke, thank you for laying in the floor in front of the couch. Thank you for staying off the couch. Thank you for being quiet. Thank you Angel for using the litter box." All these statements come with CLEAR Pictures of what you Want and Desire. When you made it CLEAR what you wanted, the horse was able to understand. It was not your assertiveness. It was your clarity :-)

I have taught Visualization and affirming statements to thousands of people whose animals were transformed by them, some even curing cancer and tumors. The horse I truly believe was helping you. They understand way more than we give them credit for on some levels. While I cannot be sure, I just doubt he needed you to be assertive. He more appreciated your Clarity when you took time to show him exactly what you desired. Especially since you did not have a lot of experience with horses.

Hi Suzanne!

Love your story! My daughters both had horses growing up, so I found myself at the barn every night and every weekend for about 5 years.

I learned to clean the hooves and brush them too and how to tackle them up. It was a wonderful experience and a real confidence builder when you can look a huge horse in the eye and walk him to his stall without him carrying you along helplessly ready to cry!

One last thing I found with being around these horses is that they have a huge healing energy field. If I was feeling sick, by the time I spent hours helping my daughters with their horses, any illness seemed to have melted away.

Has anyone experienced this? Thank you for sharing so I could go back to that fabulous experience years ago. And Happy Mother's Day!

Suzanne - Loved this story and the visual imagery. Congratulations on literally taking the plunge. We all have fears and then, when we overcome them, we realize most of it was in our heads. Whoever thought I'd become a pseudo "techIe" and manage my own blog. It's a great feeling.

Great topic! With the issue increasing so quickly, parents really do need to be aware of the example they set for their children. I have to say I was amazed when I had a discussion with one women, who was not a mother, that felt that what "the Obama's" were doing was ridiculous. It never ceases to amaze me how out of touch some are with this issue.
The Food Issue/Solution is very complex so it is important to be educated rather than resist because of political views. Even as adults, we don't want to operate with a smaller brain when we know how to prevent that from happening.

Great article! I have to agree Suzanne. We have the My-K-Cup and we use it religiously but it takes a bit of playing around to find a coffee that gets a great flavor - you definitely need one that's finely ground and a bit on the strong side. I'm psyched to check out these k-caps! Thanks!

Dear Grandpa, is a tribute to my grandpa who died on December 17th, 2010. He suffered from Alzheimer's disease for many years, which I documented through poems and stories. Recently, I have chosen to write letters to him, so he will forever be on my mind.

My site not only serves in an intimate way, but it also shows the world just how serious this disease is. Anyone who has been through, or is currently going through this experience, is welcome to comment or email me. I can answer any questions and I hope that this can be as comforting to you as it is for me.

In addition, the traffic and clicks on the advertisements will create an income, all of which will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association to aid in research and support groups.

Please help make this dream come true. Thank you.

I could not agree with your conclusion more - starting preventative measures early is key and I also agree that, no matter where you are on life's continuum, if you engage in a healthy life style that includes measures for brain health, that we will find us entering our 90's with a lesser percentage of dementia.

Hi Suzanne,

A very interesting article with a lot of good information in it. Are you going to be going into more depth on these issues in future editions? I was particularly interested in your comments about supplements. Are there specific supplements that you recommend? Do the required supplements change with age?

Thanks for a thought provoking article....

This is an excellent post and shows that you''ve got to delve into research to get at the true picture. I couldn't agree more that if I got Alzheimer's, I'd rather get to the advanced stage quickly for my sake and my caregivers. I play bridge regularly which is a real mind-buster. You've got to be remembering cards and analyzing deals every minute you're playing. Chess is also know to keep the brain healthy. They're also fun. There are people in their 90s playing bridge and winning tournaments!

I so appreciate your writing about Laughter Yoga. One of the main benefits to laughing is the relief from whatever stress is in your life. Today, many are stressed about the economy and their jobs. One study found that 34% of employees said they thought that stress on their job would cause them to burnout soon, and nearly half rated their jobs as highly stressful.
One of the most consistent trends in companies has been a drop in employee morale mainly due to heavy downsizing over the past several years. Most companies are now making efforts to find ways to boost morale and there is no more powerful tool for improving morale than making work fun. You can read about the benefits of an employee program offering laughter yoga at <a href="http://bit.ly/baRcr2" rel="nofollow">http://bit.ly/baRcr2</a>

Alice, I loved getting to know you in Ellen Britt's Telesummit. Your work is so important.
Great how you have taken your love of music and applied it to the therapeutic effects of music on Alzheimer's patients. I remember hearing also about how you have created music especially for in the operating room.
I'd love to interview you on my Ageless Woman Radio Show sometime. It's a 30 minute show every Wednesday at 3pm Pacific time. Would you be interested?

Hi Suzanne, I found on the 30-day blog challenge of which I am also a part! I've been using music with Alzheimer's patients in Louisville, KY for over 20 years now and I never cease to be amazed at the profound reactions we often get from the patients.
In 1994 I did a formal study on the "Therapeutic Effects of Music on Alzheimer's Patients" and it gave me such hope that music can really make a difference in the quality of life of the patient and the family. I saw Mom or Dad get up from their wheelchair and go to their spouse to dance to am old song that I was playing on the piano.
I finally made a CD because so many families asked me to. You can find it at http://www.healingmusicenterprises.com/products/products_alzheimer.html. You can also just buy a download of the CD if that's easier. Hope you'll check this out! Best wishes, Alice Cash #blog30

You can also just buy a download of the CD if that’s easier. Hope you’ll check this out! Best wishes, Alice Cash #blog30

Hi Suzanne,

Yes Alzheimer's is certainly devastating to the person who has it,and I think more so for the people who love and care for them. I had aunt who developed the disease back in the 70s when they were first detecting the onset of Alzheimer's. My uncle was left in limbo as to how long it took the disease to progress and how it would develop. My aunt lived another 14 years, most of them in a rest home, very sad.

Thanks for reminding us to move, Suzanne! Both yesterday and today I meant to take a break and take a walk, but...time slipped away while I stared at the monitor most of the day (sigh).

Tomorrow for sure!

And good point about combining motion with mental activity. Makes so much sense.

Hey Suzanne, you are so right about keeping the brain stimulated. I've been playing lumosity games for a while. I see progress. And, it's not in the math area. :( Every category but there. I'll keep exercising though.

Hey Suzanne - Thanks for the article. My mom was diagnosed with alzheimers, but got better instead of worse, so we took her for a 2nd opinion. It turns out she just has normal, age-related memory loss. Phew! It's been said before, but always get a 2nd opinion! ;-)

I am grateful you wrote this book. I spent time assisting my mother-in-law when she broke her hip and spent the last part of her life in bed. She helped raise me and about 30 other children until she was over 80! She was always caring for babies until they began school. She was the most loving, forgiving person I knew growing up.

Once she began having hallucinations and so they gave her shock treatments when I was young. Now decades later, as she lay in bed, they gave her many medications which brought back these symptoms, which had been gone all this time. One moment she was totally normal and the next she would ask you what you were doing, endlessly, dozens of times for an hour or so! Then she would imagine a fire and go crazy!! She would see dust that did not exist and want us to clean it away! (She kept a sparkling house and all her pots and pans always looked new!) It was a difficult job for someone to handle 24/7. In the beginning she was helped to the bathroom and later she had to remain in bed with diapers.

The entire experience turned into one gigantic drama from some sitcom! Family members and friends arguing about her state of mind. Some would visit and find nothing wrong and claim the rest of us were going mad! She demanded to pay her own bills and she could not even write a check. I will not go into details except to admit it was one of the most challenging experiences of my life, remaining loving and peaceful in the midst of it all. It was difficult experiencing her this way.

YES I intend to always remember her as she was before this happened. I remember her love, her endless compassion, her smile, her caring nature, and all thing things she taught me. She bought presents for everyone in the family and friends and neighbors on a budget, without a car and often by phone, or when someone happened to take her shopping. She was totally amazing!! She was an amazing cook and seamstress too. She had beautiful gardens and flowers. I still love her dearly even though she passed a few years ago.

I am so happy you wrote this book so other families can FOCUS ON the person THEY KNOW STILL LIVES INSIDE and simply can no longer express themselves in a way that is authentic and real, due to some physical and mental challenges. Any of us could be here tomorrow and I sincerely hope my family remembers who I am today and not what I might become if I became ill with something similar.

My great gratitude to all of you!

Endless love and appreciation, Morgine

The most important thing I did to improve my brain function was to move beyond neurosis and become self-actualized.I did this in my fifties when, after a long search, I figured out how to do this.

Hi Suzanne: I believe you can keep your old blender and just replace the rubber gasket - that's the ticket usually and I don't think they're hard to find. Cheryl

I like what you are doing for families with Alzheimer's. Wondering if I can help? I have a site that focuses on caregivers (primarily adult children) and provides information and stress management www.caregiverrelief.com. But not just to sell them stuff, but to educate on services, programs and products that can help them. So if you find merit in it, please let me know, perhaps we can collaborate.

Mimi, I love your memories of your grandmother. The only grandmother I had died when I was two and hospitalized with polio, so I have no memories of her. However, my mother was not only a wonderful mother, but a wonderful grandmother to my children. From the time her first grandchild was born, she became "Grandma." The memories her grandchildren have of Grandma are priceless and cherished.

I never had the gift of grandmothers. Both of mine had long been deceased when I was born. But I can appreciate the wisdom they have to offer. And I can appreciate when I see a quilt that was made by a grandmother. It is love, and it's a treasure I hope I'll be able to give to my grandkids some day, whenever they arrive--even if I had to handsew it.

Hi Suzanne. Thank you so much for this. I too had a grandmother who I was close to. She was a wonderful role model for me on what women could accomplish in the world. She died on July 4th, so I just spent time really remembering her. <br/><br/>Andrea

Suzanne, thank you so much for sharing the simple, true wisdom of another generation that I think truly was "the greatest!" That was the second grandmother quote of my day. The first came from my sister (in Bellingham, WA!) who reminded me of our Irishgreat grandmother's words "I never looked for trouble. And when I found it, I didn't hug it to me." So here's to order that can get us through troubling times and the wisdom not to let those moments cling to our spirits!<br/><br/>Mimi<br/>www.thegoodnessgrows.com

You raise an excellent point Suzanne.<br/><br/>Many of us do carry around shackles or our own making.<br/><br/>We have to first see them and realize they are there and then, we have to open them up and release them.<br/><br/>Stanley Bronstein<br/>http://stanleybronstein.com<br/>MrAchievement

Suzanne - this is a great reminder. We do need to look up once in awhile and see the other person there. What a great story!<br/><br/>I had it happen in reverse. I was the one who was dejected, having just gone through a heartwrenching meeting. I walked into the Home Depot in Hawaii to pick up a few things. As I wrote the check, the young woman behind the counter said, "Aunty, I need you to write your phone number here." Aunty. That's all she said. In Hawaii that is a term of endearment and respect when you don't know the woman's name. <br/><br/>I got tears in my eyes, and felt lifted up at the same time. Aunty. I belonged somewhere after all. I'll never forget that young woman and the gift she gave me without knowing. And it's been almost 10 years. <br/><br/>Since then, I make an effort to say a kind word to strangers, especially those who seem to be having a rough day.<br/><br/>Beth
