Don’t let Keurig convenience overrun our landfills…
Keurig Coffee makers seem to be all the rage this year!
I have seen so many TV commercials and have had occasion to make a cup of coffee with one at a relative's home. It just seems so packaging crazy to use this handy system.
When I was gifted with a Special Edition Keurig Coffee Maker recently, I felt torn as to whether to love it or hate it. Fast and easy to make a cup of tea or coffee. Wasteful to use the little K-Cups and add to the landfills. The K-Cups are not yet recyclable. They are made up of plastic, foil, and a sophisticated paper filter that is firmly attached to the plastic.
And you do pay more than 50 cents for each K-Cup.
I noticed Keurig has what's called a My-K-Cup. That seemed like it would be more ecologically friendly. When I read about this option, I heard very bad reviews about the quality of the item as well as the way it works. Plus, I understand you have to take a piece off the coffee pot in order to use it.
Searching around on Amazon, I noticed a product called K-Caps. I read some reviews and studied the company website. Sounded like it was the best solution of any of the options I've read about. I ordered them and have tried the little caps and they work! You can fill up a number of your recycled K Cups and have them ready to go. I added them to the Breville K-Cup holder I purchased.
I feel MUCH better about using the machine now. I get the convenience of a quick cup of something hot to drink AND I'm being GREEN about it! And love using my variety o loose teas in the recycled K-Cups. This K-Cap system works beautifully.
You can find out more about their product and read the story of the engineer who knew there had to be a better solution than throwing out those well designed K-Cups by clicking this link: Reuse your Keurig K-Cups!

Great article! I have to agree Suzanne. We have the My-K-Cup and we use it religiously but it takes a bit of playing around to find a coffee that gets a great flavor – you definitely need one that's finely ground and a bit on the strong side. I'm psyched to check out these k-caps! Thanks!
